This past 2007 trout season on The Ausable and other rivers of the Adirondacks was a mixed bag. There were periods when the fishing was great and other times when it was below standard. For the most part, I would rate the season a success - up to late July and September, when there was a six week period with practically no rain. The Ausable was the lowest I have ever seen it during the month of September. The fishing remained fair because of the colder nights so the water temperature stayed well above the danger points. Guide service was up from last year and the largest fish taken was caught while fishing with one of our guides. It was a beautiful twenty six inch brown and a lady from Saratoga was the lucky angler on her very first trip out. Most of the major hatches were good with the exception of the Isonychias and Blue Winged Olives. Because of the low water conditions, those hatches were not up to par. Late fall rains has the river in good condition now and there is good fishing on the two catch and release sections of the Ausable. Best patterns to fish right now are the bead head picket finn and small muddlers fished slow along the bottom. The slower, deeper sections are most productive. An apology is in order for the delay in getting fly orders out this year. There were just too many fly orders and IÕve slowed down from age and health. I am now just beginning to catch up with orders so any new ones will be filled quickly. I will also be taking orders for my custom rods with delivery before Christmas.
