JUNE'S FLY OF THE MONTH

The Green Drake is the most important hatch during the month of June. On the Ausable, it hatches around the 1st of June to around the 15th. When the spinners mate over the stream and descend on the water to lay their eggs, they create a feeding frenzy. The trout feed heavily on this spinner stage of the fly. This final stage of the drake is called the Coffin fly. This usually happens just around dark so it's important for the fisherman to be on the stream at that time to experience some of the best dry fly fishing of the entire year. This hatch lasts from ten days to two weeks.

One of the most productive old time patterns that represents the spinner stage is the Coffin fly, which is pictured below. This is the pattern my father (Vic Betters) and his fishing buddies fished so many years ago. It was tied in anticipation of this celebrated hatch by Ray Bergman and "Red" Wilbur and accounted for many a large fish late in the evening.

Hackle or wing:
Head:
size 10 or 12.
Badger hair with the black tips tied in long.
white or creamy ivory body dubbing.
Badger hackle or grizzly works equally well.
hot orange or cream. (I prefer hot orange).

Note: Another pattern that has worked well is the haystack pattern tied with cream deer hair for the tail and wing.

Fran's recommend selection for the month of June:

The following patterns will be most productive during June:

AuSable Caddis, Golden Caddis, Coffin fly, Cream, green and rust haystacks, grey fox and dun caddis. These eight patterns will insure you of catching fish on the AuSable.

If these patterns are not available in your local sport shop, they may be ordered by emailing me or call (518) 578-2283.
