AUGUST'S FLY OF THE MONTH

Since August is normally the warmest month of the season, small flies are usually the most productive. Terrestrials are always good during the hot months and grasshoppers and ants usually lead the field in productivity. There is one large fly, however, that always appears during August that produces lots of large fish during late evening hours. This is the large orange stonefly, our fly of the month for August.

Dragon Stone Fly

DRY STONEFLY

Hook:

8 and 10

Tail:

Dark brown deer or elk hair

Body:

Bright orange poly yarn or dubbing

Ribbing:

Grizzly hackle palmered over the body

Downwing:

Dark brown deer hair or elk tied in heavy

Hackle:

Dark brown saddle hackle tied in heavy in front of wing. One long saddle or two neck hackle recommended.

Head:

Hot orange thread

This fly is a killer when fished with a skittering action in the pockets and pools at dark or later. I've taken many a large fish in the 15 to 20 inch range from just before dark to ten or eleven at night. These large stoneflies come off all night so itÍs a great fly for night fishing.

Recommended August Selection: Orange stonefly size 8 and 10, AuSable Caddis size 14 and 16, fur bodied ants in sizes 16 and 18, hoppers in sizes 12 and 14, midges in sizes 18 to 22.

If these patterns are not available in your local sport shop, they may be ordered by emailing me or call (518) 946-2605.
